Civic Association Cetviny/Zettwing (futher referred to as CA)

CA was registered with the Interior Ministry in Prague on April 12, 2001. By its statutes, CA is a non-profit, non-political organization open to new members and managed by a three-member Board. We can be reached on cetviny@volny.cz.

Mission

CA's mission is twofold:

  1. To influence the future development of the Novohradské mountain region towards the ecological tourism
  2. To stimulate the discussion on the rootcauses, events and consequences of the post-war development of the Czech border regions

Due to the fact that a significant part of the Novohradské mountains was located in the forbidden border zone for several decades, the nature has been extraordinarily well preserved. Moreover, the region stands a very good chance to preserve this unique character: the road network is thin and industries virtually nonexistent. The absence of the infrastructure and of the job opportunities, however, contribute to the economic backwardness of the region. That is why the government institutions have started embarking on activities aimed at reinvigorating the region economically. CA aims to support the future vision of the region which will strive for improving region´s economic situation while minimizing the damaging effects to its environment. CA is convinced that the ecological tourism should form a significant part of such a future regional vision.
Today's shape of the region has been strongly affected by the Czechoslovakia's post-war development. Expatriation of the German inhabitants and the subsequent re-population with the new immigrants had a fundamental impact on the conditions of life in the border regions, including the region of the Novohradské mountains. Additionally, forced departure of the German inhabitants has been a highly sensitive and often politicized event. It is fairly frequently discussed on a general level among the politicians and in the media. There is, however, lack of information about the pre-war Czech-German coexistence, post-war expatriations and subsequent destroyings of the German villages in the concrete cases. CA aims to support the activities focused on gathering and presentation of information which will help to understand the rootcauses, events and consequences of the post-war development of the Czech border regions and that way stimulate a fact-based discussion to that topic.

Initiatives

CA wants to fulfill its mission with a focus on the surroundings of Cetviny/Zettwing and on the Novohradské mountains in general through a series of targeted initiatives. These initiatives can be split into documentation initiatives and local initiatives.

A. Documentation initiatives
  1. To create an electronic archive of the pictures and postcards of Cetviny/Zettwing and surrounding area
  2. To gather oral history from the eye witnesses of the development in Cetviny/Zettwing over the past 70 years
  3. To gather archive documentation mapping the history of Cetviny/Zettwing over the past 70 years
  4. To support publication of information on Cetviny/Zettwing and other border regions
  5. To keep this web page informative and up to date

B. Local initiatives
  1. To contribute to the restoration of the church in Cetviny/Zettwing
  2. To support installation of information billboards in Cetviny/Zettwing
  3. Potentially, to support establishment of an exhibition place in Cetviny/Zettwing

As for the church restoration, there has been considerable progress which resulted in its renewed consecration in 2003. CA supported the church restoration through supporting the process and fundraising through the Czech-German Future Fund. Also, in cooperation with the Czech state forestry company, information tables were installed at the Mairspindt border crossing and at the Parish Chapel.

CA has recently limited its activities to the documentation area. Here we e.g. supported the publication "Lost Sudeten" with providing the materials for the chapter on this region.
